Nigeria Facing Social Unrest Amidst Economic Hardship | Bahaushiya News

Millions in Nigeria Protest Rising Food Prices and Unemployment, Fueling Concerns About Social Unrest.

In the wake of nationwide protests triggered by soaring living costs, Nigeria finds itself on the brink of social upheaval. Recent demonstrations in Kano and Minna over the high cost of living have sparked a chain reaction of protests and counter-protests across the country.

While many citizens decry the economic hardship, others advocate for patience with the current government. Pro-democracy activists, in a show of solidarity, marched from the Unity Fountain to the National Assembly complex in Abuja, urging the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to halt its planned protest and resume negotiations with the Federal Government.

Sunday Attah, convener of the Nigerian Civil Society Forum, voiced opposition to the planned protest, emphasizing the need for patience with the government's efforts. However, amidst calls for patience, concerns linger over the effectiveness and timeline of economic reforms and their impact on the populace.

The escalating protests reflect mounting frustrations as families grapple with food shortages, high transportation costs, and inflation. Economic challenges have also taken a toll on businesses, exacerbating the struggle to stay afloat amid soaring energy costs and an unstable foreign exchange rate.

Economist and university lecturer, Mathieu Iyala, warns of the dire consequences of the prevailing economic conditions. He highlights incidents of goods-bearing trucks being attacked and food items looted, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Retired security officer, Bem Hembafan, expresses concern over the potential for violence and looting fueled by dwindling purchasing power and food insecurity. He warns of the security risks posed by internal unrest amidst growing economic hardships.

With increasing defaults in house rent renewal and rising household expenses, the strain on families is palpable. Chijioke Umelahi, a lawyer and former lawmaker, urges the government to address food insecurity through short and long-term measures, including price controls and tax incentives for manufacturers.

While the presidency and the APC express confidence in addressing the economic challenges under the leadership of Tinubu, the urgency of the situation demands immediate action. As the specter of social unrest looms large, the government must prioritize the welfare of its citizens to avert a deeper crisis.
