President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, has urged for the suspension of economic sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea by the regional bloc.

Speaking at the Extra-ordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Abuja on Saturday, President Tinubu emphasized the need to abandon ineffective measures that hinder the progress of member states. He highlighted the original purpose of ECOWAS, rooted in fostering cooperation and improving the welfare of West African citizens through democratic governance and regional solidarity.

President Tinubu clarified that ECOWAS's actions were guided by principles of security, social stability, democratic governance, and economic development for all. He affirmed that there was no hidden agenda or malice behind the sanctions, but rather a genuine desire to uphold regional ideals.

In the spirit of compassion and goodwill, President Tinubu called for the suspension of sanctions, emphasizing the significance of Ramadan and Lent as times for unity and empathy. He proposed practical steps to foster dialogue and cooperation among ECOWAS member states, urging leaders to prioritize the economic development and well-being of their people.

The President urged ECOWAS to facilitate the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to affected nations and encouraged Nigeria to resume the export of electric power to Niger. He emphasized that the suspension of sanctions is not merely a diplomatic gesture but a crucial step towards fostering greater regional cooperation and addressing common challenges.

President Tinubu concluded by extending a hand of friendship to the leadership of Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger, urging them to embrace dialogue and cooperation for the collective prosperity of the region.
