Breaking: Northern Group Calls for Immediate Removal of INEC Chairman — Bahaushiya News

Northern Group Demands Immediate Resignation or Removal of INEC Chairman, Citing Loss of Public Trust
Abuja, Nigeria — (Bahaushiya News)

A prominent northern coalition has called for the immediate resignation or removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing a total loss of public confidence and credibility in his leadership.

In a strongly worded statement made available to Bahaushiya News, the group expressed deep concern over what it described as the INEC Chairman’s inability to uphold fairness and justice in Nigeria’s electoral process — values the institution is constitutionally expected to protect.

“The INEC Chairman should be removed, should resign, or step down from his position. Such a person should not, in any way, hold a position in our country's most respectable institution, from which everyone expects fairness and justice,” the group stated.

According to the coalition, the current INEC boss has failed to demonstrate the neutrality and transparency required of his office, adding that his continued stay in power poses a serious threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

“It is clear that the current Chairman cannot and will not ensure justice for all,” the statement continued. “For the sake of our democracy, the INEC Chairman must resign or be removed from his position. An individual who has lost the public's trust should not be allowed to lead such a critical institution.”

The group further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene swiftly and uphold the sanctity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“We call on Mr. President to look into this matter, as he has done with other public concerns. Let our voices be heard. Our democracy depends on an electoral commission that is fair and just for everyone,” the statement concluded.

The call from the northern coalition has reignited public debate over the credibility and independence of INEC, particularly following recent controversies surrounding electoral outcomes in several states.

Observers believe this growing demand reflects a widening distrust between the electoral body and citizens, with increasing calls for reforms that would restore confidence in future elections.

Public Reactions

Across social media platforms, Nigerians have begun to echo the group’s sentiments using the hashtag #INECChairmanResign, urging the federal government to prioritize transparency in all electoral institutions.

Many citizens argue that leadership change at INEC is essential to rebuild trust, strengthen democracy, and ensure that every Nigerian vote truly counts.
